This was a trick pizza if there ever was one!
When it came to the table, the smell and color didn't scream "fresh". (As any pizza hobbyist knows, a lot can be said about the quality of the sauce by its shade of orange-red.) Despite its looks (which were almost as dull as the hotel breakfast-room decor), there was something that hit the spot with this pizza. Sure, there was the tired burnt-taste that finds me in many a pizzeria, and the usual basil leaf was missing - but a quarter into our pizzas, both fabio and I agreed on their surprising goodness, and that the mozzarella wasn't too bad. However, and this is where the trick comes full circle, the last quarter of the pizza, which could best be described as a cool puddle of tomatoes atop soggy bread, remained on my dish, as I could not bring myself to eat another bite without getting sick. I am generously giving 4 out of 10 pizzas, thanks only to the trick factor.

FABIO: 6/10

Ristorante Pizzeria Senzanome

Prezzo: 19 Euro
2 Pizza Margherita con Porcini
2 Coca-Cola in Lattina

I liked this place from the get-go. Small and cozy with men-only groups gathered around intimate round tables, it called to mind the ideas I fancify of Italian mealtimes (ideas I'm afraid I've stolen from old Olive Garden commercials). A quick glimpse of the toppings behind the counter made me eager to order my favorite vegetariana pizza; a look at the menu changed my mind. Although the pizza prices were below average, the vegetariana asked 8 euro, while the margherita with porcini only 6. I convinced Fabio that we can rarely get a pizza with porcini for such a price, and he switched from his regular and we ordered the same. The service was quick and friendly. The pizza: very thin, but not crunchy, and the crust was of a medium thickness with no-burnt taste (thumbs up). The mozzarella was super gummy, and if it were my first time eating mozzarella I don't think I would become a fan. The mushrooms were especially yummy. They didn't taste like they had been frozen. So, I gathered that the produce (vegetables/mushrooms) may be fresh, but the other ingredients...not so much, as the tomato sauce was a bit orange-ish. I give this pizza a mid-range score.

FABIO: 5/10

As an American, I can eat just about any kind of pizza here in Italy and say it's good. Tonight was a different story. Fabio says to understand if a pizzaiolo really knows his stuff, you have to order the most basic of pizzas: the Margherita. Some days I agree with him on this, but I also appreciate a pizzeria that gives me some options. At La Smorfia, the alternatives were so that I went with Fabio and took the Margherita, the safest bet. The pizza arrived. I cut into my pizza, and as I lifted my fork I said, "I don't have much hope"; it was something about the consistency of the crust. No false prejudice here: although the tomato sauce tasted fresh, there was way too much of it. And then, my crust had that faint flavor of burnt that I just don't like at all. Hence, La Smorfia (which means "grimace") lived up to its name and earned itself 3 out of 10 pizzas. That being said, the other patrons seemed to be enjoying their non-pizza entrees, and the atmosphere was light and cheery, friendly and clean.

FABIO: 6/10
Voto finale: 6 pizze.
