Pizzeria Spera: famous for its rare female pizzaiolo and her dad who scolds rowdy customers (we were lucky enough to see him in action). Spera's pizza is the most American-like pizza I've seen in Italy...although I'm certain that's something no Italian pizzeria aspires to (and justly so). The slightly burnt cheese had a look very similar to that of Pizza Hut pizzas. Thankfully, it lacked the being-completely-drenched-in-greasiness factor, but it was missing flavor. There was absolutely NO FLAVOR to this pizza. Fabio and I both ended up adding salt; I have NEVER added salt to a pizza before! Despite these somewhat discouraging comments, I have to say this pizza is ambitious and has a lot of potential. The crust was good: thick (THE THICKEST IN FLORENCE), soft and crunchy. With the right toppings (and there were several combinations on the menu that looked inviting - like potatoes!), this could easily be a delicious (and super cheap) pizza for TWO (the crust is so filling, I left half a pizza on my plate). A fun atmosphere and friendly staff!

Una pizza strana, non sembra neanche una pizza. Forse hanno detto a chi la prepara che a Napoli la fanno con la pasta alta e lo ha preso troppo in parola! Qui tutto è troppo alto: la crosta, la base che è tipo una schiacciata. C'è così tanta pasta che copre il sapore di tutto il resto! Non che il resto sia un granché; il pomodoro sa di conserva, la mozzarella indecifrabile perchè troppo cotta, infatti è scura. Poi era talmente sciocca che ho dovuto aggiungere il sale a mano. Non so se non mi è riuscita di finirla perchè mi aveva riempito troppo o perchè non mi piaceva, ma a metà ero già sazio. Però il prezzo è bassissimo e i camerieri simpatici.

In this ex-prison (decorated with cell-worthy reading material), you can treat yourself to a fine pizza! The crust was perfect: crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The mozzarella was fresh and smooth, not too gummy. The tomato sauce had a good flavor. I only detected two quasi-negligible negatives: a couple of small burnt spots on the crust, and almost too much sauce for my liking. Much better than your usual jail food...I would assume!

Pizzeria che si trova in un vero ex carcere; non ha l'atmosfera di una prigione, forse avrebbe potuto giocare di più su questo tema per rendere più affascinante il posto. Ma veniamo alla pizza: non male, stile napoletano, quindi un pò alta, e ricerca della qualità degli ingredienti. Il pomodoro buono, perchè non ha quel sapore forte fastidioso. La mozzarella è il punto debole, non ha il sapore fresco come dovrebbe essere, anche se si sente che è mozzarella, che è già tanto. Servizio veloce e prezzi contenuti.

Congratulations Nuti, you've earned my vote for the ugliest pizza ever! Sarcasm aside, when it came to the taste, it wasn't so horribly disgusting that I couldn't choke it down. The crunchy crust was actually very good. The tomato sauce, average. It was the cheese that straight-up flunked. It was definitely NOT mozzarella, and seemed to be expired shreds of...monterey jack and cheddar?!? Not befitting an Italian pizzeria (especially one claiming to be the oldest in Florence), barely sufficient for a train station dumpster.

La foto si commenta da sola; da "ammirare" il coraggio di servire una pizza così, in Italia, io non ce l'avrei... Ah, dalla foto non si può capire che la pizza era pure troppo salata.

I had absolutely no hope as I walked into this pizzeria, smack dab in the middle of Florence. There were the hordes lured in by the streetside menu, and that odor that comes with being just a few steps from the train station. But, it honestly wasn't that terrible! The tomato sauce actually tasted fresh. Although there were a few burnt spots on the crust, it was still crunchy and soft. The mozzarella, disappointingly, was inexcusably gummy. The result: an average pizza and an underappreciated find for the unsuspecting tourist.

Pizzeria in centro, vicino la stazione. Quindi piena di stranieri, quindi non dovrebbe essere una pizza... e invece mi è piaciuta: uno dei migliori impasti, la crosta alta e soffice, non riempe, il pomodoro di un sapore non troppo forte. Peccato per la mozzarella, che si sente non è di qualità e quindi diventa dura e gommoso in breve tempo. Mi ha stupito pure il fatto che costasse così poco visto la zona e la clientela.
